We are very proud to say that our clothes are 100% made locally in Southern California. As you’ll read on the neck tags of most Hozell items, these garments are “conceived of, designed, crafted, and produced," all within 40 miles of our Headquarters in Costa Mesa, CA. We source all of our fabrics from domestic mills in and around downtown Los Angeles. Thanks Hermineh and Lorena. All of our clothes are washed and dyed at a dye house in south central. Thanks Jose, Duran, Lupe and Fred. And all of our clothes, from samples to production, are cut and sewn by a handful of different individuals and contractors in Orange County. Thanks Jose, Sergio, Andres, Tony and Tony 2. Oh, and we can't forget Muerte, our screenprinter. Yes, his nickname means "death" in Spanish. We won't get into his past. Basically, everything Hozell is made within 30 minutes drive of the Pacific Ocean. We hope you appreciate how rare and special this is, because it sometimes makes our lives a lot harder, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. No matter how much Hozell grows, we will always have a major operation and bulk of our products manufactured right here in our backyard. We are supporting our local businesses and so should you….
Coming soon, we will post a video showing you a behind the scenes look at how our clothes are made and introduce you to the array of fine characters that help bring Hozell products to life. Be excited.
We’re proud to call Hozell an environmentally conscious company and brand. We make great efforts to be as “green” as possible with our manufacturing methods as well as daily business operation. Our dye house uses only certified organic dyes, we make everything locally, and we keep our transportation as minimal and clean as possible. What about organic cottons, you may ask? Well, we looked into and thought about using organic cottons, but the jury is still out as to the net effect of their use and sustainability. There was a very interesting article in The Economist (yeah, we sometimes read The Economist. What of it?) arguing against the use of organic cottons. We’ll spare you all the details, but the verdict is still unclear on the actual benefit or harm of using such fabrics.
Transportation of goods is an inevitable part of making clothes, and that transportation obviously creates a negative impact on our planet. By making our clothes locally, within a 40 mile radius, we cut down on that transportation considerably – considering it’s roughly 6,257 miles to China. Additionally, all of our local transportation is done with a hybrid Prius and bio-diesel van that runs on vegetable oil that we “liberate” from the back of restaurants.. That’s right, the Hozell-mobile is a big silver “veggie van”, emitting far less toxins and minimizing the carbon footprint of our company. Why is this better for the environment? Well, first of all, it burns cleaner than diesel. Secondly, the veggie oil we use has already been used for its main purpose – cooking – so it is re-used by us. Thirdly, the oil came from a living plant that absorbed C02 from the atmosphere while it was alive, offsetting the emissions that come from being burned in an engine. And we won’t even get into how it helps to counter our dependence on foreign oil.
Oh, we also use energy saving light bulbs in the office… we do what we can.
